THE PANDEMIC HAS AFFECTED EYE HEALTH, WITH AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS COMPLAINING OF DRY EYE SYNDROME. WHAT SOLUTIONS DO SPECIALISTS OFFER?

In today's age of high technology and computerisation, most of us have our eyes put to a lot of stress, which often leads to conditions such as eye fatigue, dry eye syndrome, impaired accommodation and so on. Many patients of all ages who visit an optometrist's or ophthalmologist's office report, among other individual complaints, very similar symptoms - sensitive, itchy, tired and red eyes, a feeling of a foreign body, impaired vision at the end of the working day, and increased sensitivity to light. Dry eye syndrome (also known as dry eye disease) and eye fatigue - asthenopia - are not uncommon causes of these symptoms. The management of these conditions is becoming a major concern not only for eye care professionals, but also for GPs and pharmacists, as the number of patients complaining of dry eye and eyestrain symptoms is increasing. We talk to Vaida Kačergiene, optometrist and President of the Lithuanian Optometric Association, about eye and vision health and care.
